Program Information 

Positive Behaviour Supports (PBS) is tailored for students who face challenges with behaviours in a regular classroom setting and need intensive, personalized programming to achieve success in their learning. The PBS program aims to understand the learner more deeply by analyzing their behaviours and adjusting strategies to meet their unique needs. The ultimate goal is to help students work towards independence across various school environments. The PBS program currently supports students in Grades 1 to 9. 

Students registered in the PBS program are supported in numerous ways which include:   

  • A holistic approach including intentional plans supported by our instructional coaches, teachers, occupational therapy team, speech and language team and emotional behavioural team members 
  • Intentional, ongoing collaboration between community school team members, CFDL team members, outside multidisciplinary team members (including supports funded through FSCD), the family and the student 
  • Individualized programs focus on building upon student interests and strengths as well as target areas of growth that are specifically connected to classroom engagement and regulation 


Support & Programming

While a student is attending PBS, they will be supported by the following team:

  • Classroom teachers
  • PBS Therapeutic Assistants - Behaviour Therapy
  • PBS Educational Assistants 
  • Emotional Behaviour Specialist 

Depending on their programming, they may also access our Multi Disciplinary team, which includes:

  • Board Certified Behaviour Analyst
  • Speech Language Pathologist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Mental Health Therapist
  • Family School Liaison Worker

PBS Classrooms:

  • provide for deeper personalized learning and personal profiling of students
  • focus on strength-based programming
  • have intensive intervention and analyze behaviours
  • have a rich and welcoming environment focusing on inquiry and project-based learning
  • look at students holistically – the learning team members work together to build a learner profile
  • liaison with other community supports as needed
  • are rich in assistive technology
  • work in partnership with the community school and family to ensure successful transitions for students back to their community school classroom

Referrals

For students to be referred to the PBS program, the community school’s Inclusive Consultant will observe and work with the school to decide if a referral is appropriate.  Parents are contacted and give consent for the referral to be placed.  A team member from the PBS program will then come and observe the child to see if PBS will be the best fit for them. 

Once accepted into the program the PBS team will decide which program specific classroom will be best for the child.
