Celebrating Catholic Education

Catholic Education Week was originally scheduled for October 18–24, 2025, but due to the labour disruption, it has been rescheduled for May.

Catholic Education Week is May 9-15, 2026

Anchored in Christ, A Beacon of Hope

The Catholic Education Week theme in Alberta challenges us to move from maintenance to mission, from protecting what we have to boldly proclaiming who we are. To be anchored in Christ is to place our trust not in changing trends or cultural approval, but in the unchanging truth of Jesus Christ and the sacramental life of the Church. To become beacons of hope means living and leading in a way that draws others toward that truth—with clarity, courage, and joy. In a time of uncertainty, Catholic education stands as a visible sign of conviction, compassion, and Christ-centred purpose.

“We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain. – Hebrews 6:18-19

Edmonton Catholic Schools' mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another.

We are thankful for the opportunity to provide a faith-based education to more than 51,000 students, and for the teachers, administrators, parents, students, priests, and parishioners who are committed to Catholic education.

In Alberta, we acknowledge with deep gratitude and embrace with unwavering resolve the gift of publicly funded Catholic education.

World Catholic Education Day - Thursday, May 14

Wear Blue for Catholic Education

Celebrated 40 days after Easter on the Feast of the Ascension, World Catholic Education Day honours the gift and global reach of Catholic education. School communities are encouraged to wear blue, a colour that symbolizes piety and sincerity. Blue is also traditionally associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is especially honoured throughout May.

By wearing blue, we recognize and celebrate the vital role publicly funded Catholic schools play in shaping both education and faith across Alberta and Canada. Let’s come together to visibly show our support and pride in Catholic education!

Catholic Education Week 2026 Prayer

Dear Jesus,
Let your light shine in our Catholic schools.
Let your grace rain down,
bringing hope to each person we encounter,
wisdom to our teachers and leaders,
and strength in times of trial.

Protect us from harm.
Let the children come to You,
for the kingdom of God is theirs.

St. Thomas Aquinas,
patron saint of Catholic schools,
pray for us.

Amen.
